Brief History
This Organisation was set
up in November 1974 for detecting illegal
foreign migrants and deporting them from
Assam. In the wake of the civil war in Bangladesh
in 1971, there was a heavy influx of nationals
from there. Even after the liberation of
their country from Pakistan , hundreds
and thousands of these nationals stayed
back in Assam. Thus, a need arose for
a separate police force to detect these
people and deport them to back to Bangladesh.
A scheme known as the PIP (Prevention of
Infiltration of Pakistanis) was started
in 1960 under the supervision and control
of the DIG Police (SB) for surveilling
and watching over the infiltration
prone areas of Dhubri, Cachar and Karimganj
Districts covering about 269 km of international
boundary in addition to prevention of cross
border smuggling, crimes and sabotage.

In 1964, the PIP was renamed
as PIF (Prevention of Infiltration of Foreigners)
with the same objectives and this organisation
was successful in detecting 309,108 foreigners
out of which 259,059 have been deported.
In the meanwhile, the Assam movement for
the deportation of foreigners took place.
A six-year agitation was launched on the
demand for detection and deportation of
foreigners and this led to the signing of
the Assam Accord on the midnight of August
14,1985.
Keeping with the spirit of the Accord,
the task of detection and deportation of
the foreigners was entrusted to the Assam
Police Border Organisation.
The process of detection and deportation
of foreign nationals has undergone a significant
change after the introduction of the Illegal
Migrant (Determination by) Tribunal Act,
1983 and the Assam Police Border Organisation
is still engaged in this difficult task.
